The most rewarding illustrated spreads do not repeat the same information twice. The sentence may tell us what a character says while the image reveals what the character notices or hides. That productive difference invites children to become detectives and co-authors of meaning.
Read the pictures as carefully as the text
- Pause before reading and explore the cover together.
- Ask what changed between two illustrations.
- Follow a repeated color, animal or object across the book.
- Let the child narrate one wordless image.
